  16. <p>Swiss greenhouses predict global warming may smother plants
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Global-warming scenarios are mostly gloom and doom. As humans
  19. burn more fossil fuels, more carbon dioxide (CO2) enters the
  20. atmosphere. CO2 traps the sun's heat, causing a warmer climate,
  21. rising sea levels and drastic changes in weather. The one
  22. bright spot seemed to be that because plants "breathe" CO2, they
  23. might be expected to thrive.

  25. <p>     Not necessarily, it turns out. A study of two artificial
  26. rain forests created inside greenhouses at the University of
  27. Basel, Switzerland, indicates that too much CO2 can harm plants.
  28. One greenhouse had an atmosphere like today's; the second had
  29. as much CO2 as is predicted for the middle of the next century.
  30. The effects: plants in the second rain forest produced starch
  31. deposits that could interfere with photosynthesis, and the
  32. soils they lived in showed a rapid loss of nutrients. The
  33. scientists are now working with other experimental ecologies,
  34. and the preliminary results are the same.
